6th Grade Art
Welcome to Ms. Raby's 6th Grade Art Class Website!
This year our class will be exploring the basics in
our art making. Each unit will focus on the Elements of Art and the Principles
of Design. We will explore these ideas and practice them using process based
curriculum. When the trimester ends, your student will have had the opportunity
to experience working with several different medias and techniques.
A new western artist will be introduced every day. Students be responsible for
taking notes and keeping up with these notes in a small, braded folder. There
will be a small quiz over these artists every week. On these quizes, students
will need to identify the title of the art piece, the artist, and the date it
was made. Students will also need to place the artwork on a timeline.
Every Monday, a sketch will assigned. These
sketches will be due on Friday at the beginning of class. Sketch paper is
available in the classroom, but not necessary to complete the assignment. Each
sketch is worth 10 points.
I am excited to meet your student and to learn more
about them throughout the trimester. Please contact me if you have any
questions, comments, or concerns. Let’s have a great year!

Classroom Rules and Procedures
· Students should arrive to class on time every day and should go immediately to their assigned seat and prepare to work.
· Students should be prepared with the proper materials for each class.
· Students should keep up with their Artist Notebook, this will be a grade and helpful for studying tests.
· Students are expected to keep up with their notebook/Portfolio assignments.
· Student should be respectful and listen during lectures, presentations and demonstrations. Failure to do so will receive a proper reprimand.
· Students should work in a timely manner. This does not mean rush through your work. Remember, quality over quantity.
· Disorderly and rude behavior will not be tolerated.
· If students remain in their assigned seats all week and have minimal behavior issues, students will be given permission to sit where they like on the last day of the week.
· Work should be kept in assigned areas. Works left outside of assigned areas are prone to disappear. Students are responsible for missing work.
· If a student is not pleased with a grade they have earned, they have the opportunity to improve the work for more points.
· Ten minutes before the end of each class is designated clean up time. All students should stop working and clean up. The class will not be dismissed until the room has been inspected and approved. If the classroom is left a mess, the teacher will arrange a time for the class to clean the room together.
· Students should remember to use proper methods in citations and to avoid plagiarism.
· Students who do not follow the classroom rules will be given points as advised by the RCMS handbook.
6th grade Art Syllabus 2013-2014
Assignment 1: 2 weeks
Name Tag/20 Important Things-
This is a great beginning project that allows me to learn about my students and their abilities as an artist. This will become a reference for me in the future when grading students’ work and growth. Points: 100
Assignment 2: 2 weeks
Color Theory-
This project allows the students to learn through doing and master the ability to mix paint. The Color Theory Unit also gives the students the opportunity to practice controlling paint with their brush. Points: 100
Assignment 3: 3 weeks
Self Portrait with Line and Shape-
This is one of the most challenging projects in my curriculum. The students will learn how to draw themselves with accuracy using a mirror, pencil, paper, and a ruler. Students will explore the correct type of lines to use during sketching and the proper procedures. This also allows students to practice their math skills with measurements.
Points: 100
Assignment 4: 3 weeks
Sculpture-
In this unit, the students will learn about Claus Oldenburg’s BIG idea (literally). Students will be divided into groups and will construct a small every day object in a big way. Students will learn terms used in sculpture as well as practice assembling. Materials will be provided by RCMS, however, some students may want to use materials brought from home. This is not required, but will be permitted as long as the students leave these materials in their art room cubbies. Materials that become a distraction will be taken away and can be picked up by a parent/guardian.
Points: 150
Assignment 5: 2 weeks
Principles of Design and Literature-
The students will learn the basics of the Principles of Design while deeply examining the literature from their Reading class curriculum. The students will depict an important part of the story with their knowledge of design. Points: 150
Art History Notebook: 12 weeks
The students will be responsible for listening to 5 minute lectures and taking notes on our “Artist of the Day”. These notes should be kept in their Art Notebook. These will be checked before the end of each grading period. Each entry is worth 2 points. Points: 100
Art History Exams: 12 weeks
Students will have a test every 2 weeks on the artists/art they have covered in class. These tests will consist of Multiple Choice, Slide Identification, True/False, and Drawing Portions. Each test will be worth 50 points. Points: 250
Sketch Books: 12 weeks
Every week a new sketch book will be assigned. The students will be graded on their ability and growth. Each sketch is worth 10 points. Two points will be removed for each day it is late. If a student turns in a sketchbook one week (or more) later than the assigned date, they can still earn 2 points. Points: 120
